What is recycled asphalt?
Although asphalt is certainly manufactured to last for a long time, after time and prolonged usage it will tend to wear out. When this happens, old or broken asphalt is torn up from roads, driveways and parking lots and is replaced with fresh, new pavement.
So what happens to the old stuff? In the past it was common for contractors to simply dump the broken bits of asphalt into a landfill. This wasteful practice is now frowned upon as recycling has become the new norm.
Instead of allowing asphalt to take up space in landfills, the material can now be repurposed for future construction and landscaping projects. Old asphalt is removed off the existing road surface and ground into chips. These chips can then be used to lay down onto a surface, compacted and sealed forming an asphalt surface that is much more durable than a regular gravel surface.
What are the benefits to working with recycled asphalt?
There are many compelling reasons to choose paving ships for your next big project. Some of the advantages to doing so include:
- Cost Savings – Of course, the most attractive benefit associated with using recycled materials like asphalt has to do with the savings involved. Due to the fact that fewer virgin materials must be excavated and used throughout the production process, you can expect your materials expenses to drop significantly. This is especially true when you consider just how high oil prices can be, as well as how volatile those prices are. In addition, recycled materials tend to be lighter in weight than virgin asphalt, thus lowering fuel costs during transpiration and delivery. The end result is better profit margins and happier, more satisfied customers.
- Eco-Friendly – Another major draw for the recycling of asphalt is the fact that it offers an environmentally responsible material for construction purposes. Instead of tapping into non-renewable resources and virgin materials, we can make use of old materials for new projects. This also eliminates the waste that accumulates in our landfills. Asphalt does not break down or biodegrade over time, which means that it will remain in landfills permanently. By avoiding the introduction of old asphalt to landfills, we ensure that valuable space is no longer taken up and that we reduce our carbon footprint.
- Durability – Asphalt is known for being durable and long-lasting. Even after going through the process of being recycled, this sentiment holds true. You can expect your asphalt to remain strong and hold its place even when exposed to very high volumes of foot or vehicular traffic. It will also maintain its integrity when faced with the wind, rain, and the freezing cold temperatures associated with NJ winters. You can count on the material for decades.
How can recycled asphalt be used?
Recycled asphalt can be used for projects of all types and sizes. Some of its most common uses include:
- Driveways – Many homeowners love the look of asphalt that has been recycled into aggregate for a driveway surfacing material. Since the crushed asphalt still has some tar on it, the material can be wetted and compressed to create a solid, semi-permanent surface for driving. The pavement is able to endure high volumes of traffic and can withstand even the harshest weather conditions.
- Bike Paths – Crushed, recycled asphalt is a great option for creating recreational trails like bike paths. The affordable material is attractive and eco-friendly, making a great contribution to any city park. The aggregate is easy to compress and offers a smooth, safe surface to ride on.
- Industrial Sites – Asphalt chips are excellent for establishing a durable work surface for industrial traffic in mill and shop yards. The surface is easily constructed by laying it out, compacting and sealing to make an asphalt surface to run your equipment on.
